Compliance criteria

In order to check if your product or organization is ready for Fairtrade certification, we’ve translated the Fairtrade Standards into sets of measurable ‘compliance criteria’.

We classify the few most important criteria as ‘major’. Failure to meet these major criteria can stop you from becoming Fairtrade certified in the first place, or, if you are already certified, lead to a suspension and, if not corrected, to decertification.

For producer organizations we’ve introduced a scheme where compliance for each criterion is ranked from 1-5, known as the SCORE Certification Model. The definition of these ranks is public so that everyone knows what the expectations for each compliance criterion are. For the SCORE system we also defined some Development Requirements where an average score of at least 3 is needed for overall compliance.
